A commemorative ceremony took place in Lakki at the stele dedicated to the Battle of Leros (which this year marks the 75th anniversary) in the presence of civil, military and religious authorities and the public.

After a homily by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Rhodes, Fr. Luca ofm, a laurel wreath was placed on the monument by the Ambassador followed by a minute of silence.

The Italian and Greek national anthems concluded the touching ceremony, which was followed by refreshments offered by the Association at the Officers Club of the 588TE Infantry Battalion (former Dogana/Finanza bulding).

During the reception, the Ambassador met local authorities and fellow countrymen present on the island.

The guests were then invited by the G.S. on a guided tour of the historic buildings of the former Idroscalo di Lepida and the Sangiorgio Submarine Base, illustrating both their initial purpose and current use.

Returning to Lakki, the visit ended with an overview of the rationalist architecture of Portolago (Lakki).

In the evening, the guests attended the inauguration of the office of the Association in the presence of many local authorities and a large audience.

After the blessing by the Metropolitan S.E. Paisio, the G.S. presented the social activities carried out during the last year with a short video on the notes of O' sole mio from the concert last September. It was followed by speeches given by the President of AIAL, who thanked all those who collaborated on the success of the event, by the Mayor Mr. Kolias and by the National Deputy Mr. Kamateros, both of whom complimented the achievements of the Association.

The last words were given by H. E. Marras, who underlined the importance of cultural exchanges in the relations between the two countries, as recognized during the first Italian-Greek summit held recently in Corfu, which led to the Tempo Forte initiative.

The evening continued with a large buffet and music by Manolis and Stamatis Makris and the orchestra of Niko Koutouso.
